Visual study 03

Coastline Studies

A commissioned environmental survey across the Northern Pacific rim examining tidal erosion, low swell gradients, and dense marine fog over fractured basalt headlands. Photographed on medium format film over twelve consecutive dawn tides.

Plate 01

Headland fog passage

Documenting dense marine fog moving across dark basalt cliffs at first light. Exposed on medium format film to preserve deep shadow gradation through heavy salt spray, holding tactile atmospheric depth without artificial balance.

Plate 02

Low tide fissures

Macro surface study of intertidal rock fissures encrusted with black mussels and wild kelp ribbons. Raking side daylight reveals water tension, mineral deposits, and the quiet geology formed by perpetual cold ocean surges.

Field notes

Salt mist coated the front lens element every three exposures. We timed each setup against the incoming slack tide, waiting in freezing surf for the offshore wind to drop before tripping the shutter.
